Profoundness of Structures

Residential Design by Chong-Yi Chen

This architectural and interior design plan combines residential and exhibition spaces to create a unique and harmonious living environment for an artist. The building exterior is both vibrant and understated, showcasing artwork exhibitions while providing a comfortable residence and studio.

The Profoundness of Structures design stands out with its innovative use of architectural grilles. These grilles not only allow for ample lighting and fresh air but also effectively regulate the temperature inside the house. This is particularly important in the subtropical environment of Taiwan, where concrete structures tend to absorb heat. By addressing this issue, the design saves energy and protects the natural environment, making it an organic and multi-functional space that seamlessly integrates artwork exhibitions and residential living.

The design incorporates various technologies and techniques to bring the vision to life. The building entrance features grass pavers that enhance soil water holding capacity, while clear glass doors ensure abundant natural light inside. The five-floor building boasts tall and wide indoor spaces, with minimal interior decorations that allow the art paintings to take center stage. The use of fair-faced concrete, steel, and track lighting further accentuates the beauty of the artwork.

Each floor of the building has its own unique features. The second-floor corridor offers a breathtaking view of the outdoor scenery, with art paintings adorning the walls. The third floor is dedicated to the living space, where warm wooden textures and fair-faced concrete create a cozy and high-quality residential environment. The semi-outdoor corridor landscape features a fish pond, while the corridor itself is decorated with terrazzo and cobblestones, evoking a sense of natural beauty.

The Profoundness of Structures design is not only visually stunning but also highly functional. Its pragmatic design and temperature regulation capabilities set it apart from traditional designs. The project was completed in November 2017 in Tainan, Taiwan, and showcases the result of extensive research. The minimalist and modest colors of the building exterior blend harmoniously with the natural environment, while the symmetrical floor-to-ceiling windows allow ample sunlight during the day and create an elegant ambiance at night.

This exceptional design overcame various challenges, including the development of a porch adorned with wood grilles and slate bricks to enhance the natural ambiance. The result is a design that seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and nature, creating a truly unique living space.

The Profoundness of Structures design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, technical skill, and contribution to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
